Choose five topics that you think are potential research topics for your paper and briefly (in 4 to 5 sentences) explain why these topics are of interest to you. Read the overviews provided for each of the topics you select.

In order that you read each of the overviews carefully, you are to answer the following questions about each overview:

  • What is the topic you are reading about?  Guns and Violence
  • What is the source citation? Just copy and paste it from the bottom onto your blog. DO NOT COPY THE URL!  "Guns and Violence." Opposing Viewpoints Online Collection. Detroit: Gale, 2015. Opposing Viewpoints in Context. Web. 2 Oct. 2015
  • Summarize the central idea of the overview in one or two sentences IN YOUR OWN WORDS.  There is a big contorversy on whether guns should be allowed or not.  The main debate is whether banning guns would prevent violence.
  • List two to four specific details that support the central idea IN YOUR OWN WORDS. On Good Friday in 2009, a student at Henry Ford Community college shot and killed a female drama student and on new years in 2009, a kid shot and killed his 15 year old girlfriend.  All these shootings are happening yet the NRA cut funding of guns for research.
  • Create an opportunity for further research by writing down two questions the text raises about the central idea (explicitly or implicitly). Explicit means stated clearly and in detail, leaving no room for confusion or doubt, while implicit means implied though not plainly expressed.  Will banning and making all guns illegal reduce gun violence in America?  Should licensed guns be allowed in the house?
  • Write down one word or phrase whose meaning you do not fully understand.  I knew all the words in the article
  • Next, write down what may be preventing you from understanding it (is it an unrecognizable term? an unfamiliar person, place, or allusion?)
  • Use a third party resource (dictionary, thesaurus, Google search) to find its definition or meaning. Write it down.
  • Write one question about the overview that you can pose to your peers in a discussion.  Will reducing production of guns reduce gun violence.
  • What is the topic you are reading about?  Capital Punishment
